Hot water extraction vs dry carpet cleaning
The two main ways carpets get cleaned, compared honestly, so you can pick what is right for your home.
Walk into any carpet-cleaning search and you will hit two camps: hot water extraction (commonly called steam cleaning) and low-moisture or "dry" cleaning. Both have a place. The difference is how deep they clean and how fast the carpet dries.
Hot water extraction injects hot water and cleaning solution into the carpet under pressure, then immediately vacuums it back out along with the dirt, allergens, and residue it loosened. Low-moisture methods use a compound or absorbent pad to lift surface dirt with very little water, which means faster drying but a shallower clean.
Alpha Steam uses hot water extraction on every job, because it removes the most from the carpet.
Why we choose hot water extraction
It is the method most carpet manufacturers recommend for a deep clean, and the one that best handles the pet dander, allergens, and ground-in dirt in a real family home. With our truck-mounted power, you still get a few-hour dry time. See our pricing or all services.
What is the best carpet cleaning method?
For most homes, hot water extraction (often called steam cleaning) gives the deepest clean. It injects hot water and solution into the carpet and immediately extracts it along with the dirt, allergens, and residue. Low-moisture or "dry" methods dry faster and have their place, but they clean mainly the surface. Alpha Steam uses hot water extraction because it removes the most from the fibers.
Is steam cleaning the same as hot water extraction?
Effectively, yes. "Steam cleaning" is the common name for hot water extraction. It uses hot water under pressure rather than literal steam, and the heat helps break down dirt and oils so they extract cleanly.
Does hot water extraction take long to dry?
With powerful truck-mounted extraction like ours, most carpets are dry within a few hours. Strong extraction is the key, since it pulls far more moisture back out than a portable unit.
Is one method better for pets?
For pet homes, hot water extraction is usually the better choice. It reaches the dander and odor that settle deep in the fibers and backing, which surface methods tend to leave behind.
